Definitions for ecoimagine's Eco Symbols

ecoimagine eco symbol - recycled

Recycling is the process of collecting and processing materials that would otherwise be thrown away as trash and turning them into new products. Recycled products are made from recyclable materials like glass, paper, cardboard, metal, plastic, tires, textiles, and electronics. The final product is often different than the original product. For example, plastic drinking bottles can be recycled and turned into clothing like yoga pants.

ecoimagine eco symbol - repurposed

Repurposed products can be constructed from just about anything. The reason we value repurposed products is because it gives waste/trash a second life instead of going to the landfill. In some cases, repurposed content will include recycled, natural or biodegradable materials, but sometimes it might not. The point is that a manufacturer found a use for a material that someone else thought was trash. A perfect example of a repurposed product is a messenger bag made from vinyl banners. What was initially a sign for a grand opening or president's day sale, is transformed into several stylish, yet functional bags for men and women.

ecoimagine eco symbol - biodegradable

A biodegradable product means the item can break down into natural materials in the environment without causing harm. A biodegradable material will break down quickly rather than taking years. It leaves nothing harmful behind and saves landfill space. Biodegradable plastics take 3 to 6 months to decompose fully. That's much quicker than synthetic counterparts that take several hundred years.

ecoimagine eco symbol - Natural

Natural products are made from natural fibers which means it was grown according to national organic standards aka without the use of toxic and persistent pesticides, synthetic fertilizers or genetic engineering. A few examples of natural materials include organic cotton, jute, wool, hemp and flax. Jute, in particular, is a sturdy natural organic fiber that is both biodegradable and recyclable. Jute products play a vital role in supporting the livelihood of millions of people around the world.
